Release Date: May 9, 2019

TUCSON, Ariz. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations, officers arrested two U.S. citizens in separate attempts to smuggle methamphetamine and fentanyl through the Port of San Luis yesterday.

Officers referred a 29-year-old Somerton resident for additional inspection of her Jeep as she attempted to enter the United States. A CBP narcotics detection canine alerted to a scent it was trained to detect coming from the vehicle’s spare tire. A search led to the discovery of more than 40 packages of methamphetamine with a weight of nearly 44 pounds, and an estimated value of more than $131,000.

Hours later, officers referred a 23-year-old San Luis resident for a further inspection as he attempted to enter the U.S. through the pedestrian lane. A CBP canine alerted officers to the presence of drugs on his person. During the search, the man voluntarily removed two packages from his groin. The contents of the packages resulted in more than one pound of fentanyl with a value of $18,600.

Officers seized the drugs and vehicle, while the subjects were arrested and then turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
